Indonesian Embassy Urges Law Enforcement on Shooting of Indonesian Citizens in Malaysia to be Transparent

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Ambassador to Hermono urged for the investigation into the shooting case of Indonesian citizens in the neighboring country to be carried out transparently. The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will certainly supervise the legal enforcement process in the case.

Hermono said that the Indonesian Embassy will demand the commitment made by the Malaysian Prime Minister that the law enforcement in the case that killed an Indonesian migrant worker will be carried out transparently. "We will ensure that the process is carried out transparently and provide justice to the victim," Hermono said via telephone, Saturday, February 1, 2025.

The Indonesian Embassy has also provided a legal team to accompany the victim. He said that the legal team is currently gathering information from the victims and the chronology of the incident.

"We at the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur have a team of lawyers who specifically handle matters concerning Indonesian citizens. Coordination with law enforcement officers here is also ongoing," he said.

Previously, said Hermono, the Indonesian Embassy's Police Attaché had gathered information from the victim. He said that the shooting victim said that they had never attacked a Malaysian security force ship.

"That is based on the story of our citizen, we are also still waiting for the results of the investigation from the local police," said Hermono.

Previously, five Indonesian migrant workers were reportedly shot by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, at 03:00 am, Friday, January 24, 2025. The shooting resulted in one Indonesian citizen being killed, while four others were injured.

Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Judha Nugraha said that the victims of the shooting were on the same ship. APPM claimed that the shooting was carried out after the ship's passengers allegedly resisted.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also sent a diplomatic note to to encourage a thorough investigation, including highlighting the possibility of excessive use of force. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will continue to monitor developments in this case and provide consular and legal assistance to ensure that the rights of Indonesian citizens are fulfilled in the legal system in Malaysia," said Judha.
