TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - , an accommodation rental platform, projects a shift in travel trends, especially among Gen Z. Two countries, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, are the most sought-after overseas destinations for Indonesian travelers. Meanwhile, Bali, Jakarta, and Lombok remained the top destinations for foreign travelers.
These findings are based on internal data from Airbnb regarding Indonesian tourists from January to September 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Throughout 2024, Airbnb recorded a rising trend of group travel (of 3 individuals or more) in Indonesia. The platform logged a 30 percent growth in bookings for large groups.
Airbnb also revealed that , aged 18 to 29, dominate the bookings on the platform, up nearly twice as much compared to 2023. This generation typically enjoys unique and memorable experiences, driven by a desire to explore new cultures, support sustainability, and visit rarely visited destinations.
Tourists' preferences continue to evolve with increasing demand for categories such as tropical, amazing pools, beach, and surfing, based on the most searched items on Airbnb.
Regarding the preferred destinations, Indonesian tourists still seek Southeast Asian cities to travel to, with the top two being Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
These two most frequently booked cities offer a unique combination of cultural attractions, world-class shopping centers, and a variety of enticing culinary options.
Other top destinations for Indonesian tourists include the Northeast District of Penang Island in Malaysia, the Greater Melbourne Region in Australia, Johor Bahru in Malaysia, the Greater Sydney Region in Australia, Petaling in Malaysia, Chuo in Japan, London in England, and Mapo District in South Korea.
Meanwhile, foreign travelers remain favoring Bali as their go-to Indonesian destination. But Airbnb also sees an increased interest from tourists to explore other regions, such as Central Lombok Regency, Yogyakarta City, and West Manggarai Regency.
As more and more travelers embark on journeys around the world, it's essential to promote responsible behavior while visiting tourist destinations. Responsible travel is not just about reducing environmental impact, but also about respecting and supporting local communities, preserving traditions, and ensuring that future generations can experience the same wonders.
