State Secretary Confirms School Zoning System to Remain in School Admissions
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi the final decision regarding the school zoning system will be made after President Prabowo returns from his India visit.
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi has confirmed that the system will not be eliminated from the New Student Admissions (PPDB) process under President Prabowo Subianto's administration.
“No, [the zoning system] will not be eliminated. A combination of systems will be considered. We are looking for the best because each system has its own advantages and disadvantages,” said Prasetyo at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
Prasetyo indicated that the final decision regarding the PPDB system will be made after President Prabowo returns from his visit to India. A follow-up meeting will be held to determine the most suitable approach for accepting new students.
“We will wait for the President's return and then convene a limited meeting to discuss this matter,” he said.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) had earlier hinted at a potential renaming of the PPDB. Biyanto, Expert Staff for Regulation and Inter-Institutional Relations at Kemendikdasmen, revealed that the term "New Student Admissions" may be replaced with "Student Admissions System" (SPMB).
“The name has been changed to SPMB, which stands for Student Admissions System,” he stated during an interview in South Jakarta on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
He noted that the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti would provide further details regarding the SPMB system.
Previously, Minister Mu'ti had announced a significant overhaul of the PPDB system for the 2025/2026 academic year. These changes would include not only the implementation mechanism but also the terminology.
He revealed the potential removal of the term "zoning" from the new system. “This is just a preliminary indication. The term 'zoning' will likely be replaced with a different term,” he said during an interview at the Kemendikdasmen office on Monday, January 20, 2025.
Minister Mu'ti said that the proposed new PPDB system was presented to President Prabowo during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. However, the President delegated the decision-making authority to State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi.
