Prabowo-Gibran's Energy Transition Gets D-Rating from Greenpeace Indonesia
Greenpeace Indonesia believes the government's efforts in the energy transition sector have been far from optimal in the first 100 days.
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Greenpeace Indonesia gave a D rating to the Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka administration in the sector. Greenpeace assigned this rate based on their performance toward the first 100 days in office.
Greenpeace believes the government's efforts to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy are still far from optimal. "When it comes to coal and energy transition, we give a D-rating," said Leonard Simanjuntak, Country Director for Greenpeace in Indonesia, during the discussion "Shadow Report on 100 Days of the Prabowo-Gibran Administration" in Cikini, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
Leonard explained why Greenpeace rated the Prabowo-Gibran administration's performance in the energy transition sector as poor. This is because the government continues to strengthen coal use by constructing coal-fired power plants (PLTUs) in industrial areas. For example, he pointed out that most nickel smelters still rely on PLTUs built specifically to support their industries.
Leonard also criticized the government’s strategy in gas usage as a transitional energy source, calling it misguided. “This may still be in the early stages, but we can already see that Indonesia's energy policy direction is positioning gas as a transitional energy source, even though gas is also a fossil fuel,” he explained.
The Indnesia official questioned this strategy. Leonard uttered that the increase in renewable energy use in Indonesia has been relatively stagnant in recent years. “Instead of addressing the lack of political will, they are shifting to gas and prioritizing it,” he added.
Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka were inaugurated as President and Vice President of Indonesia on October 20, 2024. On January 28, 2025, the Prabowo administration will reach its 100-day mark. Before this, Prabowo held a plenary cabinet meeting to evaluate the cabinet's performance nearing the administration's first 100 days at the National Palace in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
The Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, who attended the cabinet meeting, stated that President would provide directives after the first three months or 100 days of the Merah Putih cabinet's work. According to Raja Juli, Prabowo would also outline plans for the next 100 days. “The president may also issue instructions to us regarding what to focus on for the next 100 days,” he said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
