MLEADS Provides Tourism Training for Palembang Children in Rehabilitation Program

TEMPO.CO, Palembang - Dozens of serving sentences at the Juvenile Rehabilitation Institute (LPKA) Class I Palembang will receive empowerment training from the Museum for Local Economic Development and Social Changes (MLEADS) Chapter Palembang. Robby Sunata, Coordinator of MLEADS Palembang, said that the training will focus on the tourism industry, especially in areas such as tour guiding and barista skills.

"We want these children to become more productive after they have completed their sentences," said Robby on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. In addition to tourism-related skills, MLEADS will also provide training in creative writing, graphic design/merchandising illustration, theater scriptwriting, introduction to packaging, licensing, product promotion, and marketing.

"Their work and creations will be showcased in three museums in Palembang," he added.

MLEADS is an initiative of the Indonesia Hidden Heritage Creative Hub (IHCH), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and other organizations. This initiative aims to promote local economic growth and social change through the power of museums and cultural heritage.

IHCH is an organization working to strengthen the role of museums in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially targets 4.8 and 13. They support museums in providing inclusive education that fosters social entrepreneurship, especially among young people, based on environmental, social, and economic sustainability principles.

Robby explained that IHCH created the MLEADS program, positioning museums as leaders and inspirations in community development and driving social change. MLEADS follows guidelines issued by ICOM and OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) on Museum and Local Development.

MLEADS Chapter Palembang is collaborating with LPKA Class I Palembang on this guidance and training program for children in correctional facilities. The children will learn to create products inspired by museum collections and will be educated about the positive values derived from Palembang's cultural heritage.

The three partnering with MLEADS Chapter Palembang are the Palembang City Museum of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II, the South Sumatra State Museum, and the Dr. A.K. Gani Museum.

Head of LPKA Class I Palembang, Edwar Hadi, explained that his institution houses around 150 children, with 65 participating in the MLEADS training. He is optimistic that the training will be highly beneficial, especially after they complete their sentences. "We hope that with this training, the children will be more useful and empowered in the community," he said.
