International relations observer Andrea Abdul Rahman Azzqy said on Wednesday, January 22, that the U.S. is likely to push for a closer collaboration to tackle regional security challenges such as those within the Asia-Pacific.
He said Trump-led America will continue to forge alliances and partnerships with countries within the region to counter China's growing influence.
He noted that increased U.S. military and economic cooperation with countries like Japan, South Korea, and Australia, as well as efforts to strengthen 's role as a strategic partner, will be the main focus.
“This is in line with U.S. efforts to maintain the balance of power in the region,” she said.
Andrea said President Donald Trump's protectionist policies could have a significant impact on ASEAN countries, as new import tariffs and stricter trade policies could hamper exports from Southeast Asia.
“There are opportunities for ASEAN countries to enhance intra-regional economic cooperation and seek alternative markets outside the U.S. It’s also necessary for ASEAN to navigate complex geopolitical dynamics while maintaining regional stability and cooperation,” he said.
On U.S. policy regarding the Middle East, Andrea said the U.S. will likely remain supportive of age-old allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia. America will continue to dish out tough policy on Iran while supporting policies that maintain the stability of its allies. This includes an emphasis on energy security and military cooperation.
Andrea also said Rubio has shown a strong commitment to an “America First” policy in the new U.S. administration. In consequence, the U.S. will prioritize its national interests with protectionist and transactional approaches.
