Death Toll in Central Java Landslide Rises to 19, Says BNPB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the disaster data, information, and communication center at the National Disaster Management Agency (), Abdul Muhari, said the death toll in the Pekalongan has risen to 19, after the search and rescue team evacuated two more bodies on Wednesday morning, January 22, 2025.

According to Abdul, the victims consisted of five women and fourteen men, with the youngest being four years old, and the oldest 50 years old. 

The two bodies found this morning were those declared missing when a landslide struck the Central Java region on Monday. 

“Thus, the number of missing people remains at seven,” said Abdul on Wednesday. 

During the evacuation efforts, Abdul said, several obstacles were faced by the rescue team, including the difficulty of accessing the location as the landslide damaged a bridge.

“We must take a detour through Kali Bening, Banjarnegara since we can’t pass through the bridge in Pekalongan,” he said.

Abdul said his team will continue the evacuation process along with collecting data and handling the landslide victims. He also urged the team on duty to remain vigilant of subsequent landslides due to uncertain weather conditions.

The landslide occurred in Kasimpar Village, Petungkriyono Subdistrict, Pekalongan, at around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, January 21. BNPB previously reported that at least 16 people died, 10 people were injured, and 3 others remained missing.
